Lodwar town in Turkana County has been undergoing one of the most ambitious urban transformation in northern Kenya, driven by major infrastructure projects and growing investment.
Once an isolated remote and dusty outpost, the town has rapidly reinvented itself in the recent past and is currently witnessing a construction boom, rapid commercial development and infrastructure upgrade featuring modern roads and public spaces.
With new hotels, office blocks and retail spaces rising across town, residents say Lodwar is experiencing its biggest urban shift in decades.
The latest makeover features the ‘Turkana Boy’ landmark monument, an aesthetic addition that celebrates the region as the cradle of mankind.

The town’s transformation was greatly inspired by the South Sudan link road, which improved connectivity, influenced its transformation into an emerging economic hub. Its fortunes changed significantly following the completion of the link road, which greatly accelerated commercial growth, triggered a construction boom and turned former residential areas into thriving business hubs.
Its rapid growth has been accompanied by major works including a dual carriageway network, a pedestrian flyover at Lodwar County and Referral Hospital, two major roundabouts at Lodwar GK Prison and Roberts Junction, and two bridges across the Turkwel River and the seasonal Kawalase River all designed to ease traffic flow and support rapid urban expansion.
At the Prisons Roundabout, construction is underway on a striking monument of the iconic ‘Turkana Boy,’ one of the world’s earliest human ancestors. The landmark, surrounded by landscaped gardens and a passenger waiting area, is intended to redefine Lodwar’s public spaces while reinforcing its identity as the cradle of mankind.
County officials say the makeover aims to strengthen Lodwar’s municipality status, attract tourists and investors, and cement its identity as a cultural and historical destination.
Turkana Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai said the Turkana Boy monument project is central to the town’s urban transformation agenda, combining aesthetics, tourism promotion and cultural identity.
“By installing the monument at a strategic roundabout that connects key roads within Lodwar, the municipality aims to create a lasting cultural landmark that will be seen by all who pass through the town,” he said.
He added that the initiative will place Lodwar among towns with iconic civic monuments, strengthening efforts by the county tourism department to market archaeological and heritage sites across Turkana.
In addition, the municipality management has constructed 231 parking bays along the new tarmac roads, installed cabro pavements and walkways with drainage systems and improved the overall business environment.
Locals say the changes are already reshaping perceptions. A resident, Mr Charles Ekitela noted that while Nariokotome over 130 kilometres away, is globally known for major paleoanthropological discoveries, the new monument will make such heritage more accessible and attractive to visitors.
“With a monument established in the town, many visitors and locals will be easily interested in travelling to the archaeological sites. At the moment it is expensive to travel alone,” he said.

The transformation is anchored on major national investment, including the Sh38 billion upgrade of the Lamu Port–South Sudan–Ethiopia Transport Corridor, implemented under the Eastern Africa Regional Transport, Trade and Development Facilitation Project during the Uhuru Kenyatta administration and funded through the World Bank.
Within the municipality, the county government has tarmacked feeder roads, spurring a construction boom marked by commercial buildings, modern homes, hotels, private hospitals and schools.
A newly completed truck park, located about a kilometre from the Central Business District, has helped decongest Lodwar after authorities banned heavy commercial vehicles, including lorries, water bowsers, tippers and construction machinery from the CBD to protect infrastructure.
Chief Officer for Urban Areas Management Peter Lomorukai said the municipality has also adopted annual tree planting campaigns under the Kenya Urban Support Programme to expand green public spaces.
“Even though the municipality lies in an Asal region like most parts of Turkana, routine tree planting can help create green spaces. Tree planting exercise will therefore be an annual activity,” he said.
He added that residents will be involved in nurturing trees to maturity, with plans underway to develop recreational parks and expand green zones across the town.
Further upgrades include the ongoing three-kilometre Nakwamekwi Road, which is being upgraded to bitumen standard and is expected to be completed by August as part of a wider urban modernisation plan.
The changes are also reshaping Lodwar’s property market. Old residential houses are being converted into commercial premises, while new developments continue to rise along key transport corridors.

At Chamunga backstreet, hotelier Michael Ekidor says the once-neglected area has become a thriving business hub filled with salons, second-hand clothing shops, printing services and mobile money outlets.
“The blocked roads were dumping sites for waste from rental houses. Tenants who had occupied rental houses at strategic business locations like those near Kilimanjaro Supermarket and Kakuma stage have already relocated with their premises transformed into business spaces,” he said.
At the busy Kakuma stage along the Lodwar–Kakuma road, older rental structures are being demolished to pave way for modern storey buildings. Investor John Korikel says demand is already strong.
“We are finalising the ground floor business spaces that have already been booked and labelled. The building will also have a hotel and accommodation section on the second floor overlooking Lodwar Airstrip,” he said.
