Should I always be responsible for my partner’s happiness?

Lovers share a moment together. In under a week, a man was already showing her pictures of the house they would live in and the cows he would take to her father’s compound.

I am Slinthe, currently dating with marriage in mind. I’ve noticed I’m constantly responsible for my partner’s mood – reassuring her, fixing emotional tension, and dealing with periods of distance that are suddenly followed by affection. At what point does this shift from love to emotional manipulation, and how can I tell if she is suitable for a peaceful, stable marriage?

Many men can spot a beautiful woman, but few can tell a dangerous one. Contrary to popular opinion, what makes a wife good or bad is not whether she is quiet or talkative. In any case, at home, most women are more talkative than men because they're literally running the household. Being soft or tough is not a god marker either.

Often, toughness is just a mask she learnt to wear because of her previous circumstances. No woman enjoys being hyper vigilant and guarded all the time. It's tiring.

The marker of a dangerous woman is when she makes her emotions your responsibility. That may seem trivial and you may overlook it at first but it will make that relationship heaven or hell for you.

You're always the custodian of her moods. If she is unhappy for whatever reason, you must cheer her up. And how often do we meet challenges that put us down? Almost every day. That's how often you'll be picking her up emotionally.

If she is feeling insecure because of some wild misinterpretation of your behaviour, you are the one to reassure her. You went offline for several hours because of work or poor connection, even with prior notice, but she's emotionally down. You must restore her confidence.

She doesn't even tell you directly. You'll just see cryptic messages on her social media coupled with distance towards you. If she is upset by any random thing, nobody else should be happy until you've cheered her up with money or shopping.

She randomly goes cold and tells you that's just how she's feeling today. You're thrown into anxiety for days and she returns as if nothing happened.

After keeping you in the cold, she comes with a lot of love and showers you with affection. You're supposed to take that as an apology and reset, awaiting the next episode. She plays the victim in everything and admits blame for nothing. Her moods become your pressure.

If you don't agree with her or take her side even when she's unreasonable, you are part of the problem. She is only loyal and loving when she wants something.

On other days, her behaviour is shady and you're left suspicious and overthinking. She doesn't bother to be transparent or reassuring because that's not who she is.

You are dealing with a diva, not a giver. She is high maintenance by design. She believes her presence in your life is a privilege you should be paying rent for daily.

She overestimates her worth and underestimates yours because she is entitled and ungrateful. You can't win with this type. Stop thinking you can retrain her. You'll drain yourself.

Happy couple

Some men have no qualms dating a woman who is financially out of their league.

You need a woman who can regulate her own moods such that you feel restful after being with her, not stressed. The moment you see even a tinge of ingratitude and entitlement, abort mission. This also means you can't be reckless by making dating purely sexual.

The most manipulative will often be the most seductive. A wife material rarely competes with a seductress on sexual charm.

When you make the test sexual, be sure you'll take home the Delilahs. Relationships are not sustained by attraction or charm, but emotional responsibility, stability, and mutual respect.

What often ruins a man is not obvious toxicity, but subtle patterns that gradually shift his role from partner to emotional caretaker.

When a woman consistently lacks the wisdom and responsibility to take care of her emotions and makes them your burden, the relationship stops being a partnership and becomes a cycle of pressure, confusion, and exhaustion.

A healthy relationship doesn’t force you to constantly prove your loyalty, restore someone’s mood, or walk on eggshells to maintain peace. It allows space for both individuals to experience emotions without transferring the weight unfairly.

Emotional support should be mutual, not one-sided. When only one person is regulating the emotional climate, resentment and fatigue are inevitable.

Choosing a life partner is one of serious life choices that requires discernment beyond surface attraction.

Relationships provide an opportunity for a deep connection between a man and woman that may lead to marriage.

Beauty, chemistry, and excitement can be misleading if they are not matched with character, accountability, and emotional maturity. A woman prepared for marriage brings peace, not constant tension. She communicates directly, owns her emotions, and contributes to a stable environment where both partners can thrive.

You must decide early what kind of relationship you are willing to build. If it consistently drains you more than it restores you, that is not love, it is a warning. And the cost of ignoring that warning is far greater than the discomfort of walking away.

A simple, powerful solution is to list your non negotiables. For example, you need emotional maturity and clarity of intention. When you set this standard privately, it takes only one or two clear signals to make a decision. If you don't, the fog of love will cloud your decisions and blur the boundary lines. Good luck!
